Polemic 2009 in Atharva @ TAPMI, Manipal

In January 2009 while I was with Alliance Business School, Bangalore, TAPMI invited me to be a Moderator for Polemic 2009 as part of Atharva, an annual Management Festival (first event in the new campus).  The other panelists were Mr Parthasarathy of Axis Bank, Mr BR Bhat of Corporation Bank and Mr Hirve of Reserve Bank of India.  It was emotional and exciting to me as a Home Coming!

INSIDE JOB: New Documentary Exposes How 'Banksters' Continue To Steal Ou...

I got to know that this documentary won an award as a Documentary recently. Interesting for all those who like to know on Scams, Crisis, Meltdown, etc…

The Banker to Every Indian!

Two recent news items on SBI interest and amuse me.  The first one (in Times of India last week) was that an SBI branch in UP (may be Lucknow) is offering all types of cosmetics, etc in their Locker Rooms.  The customers not only wear and see themselves in gold or silver ornaments as before, but can deck up too.  Also, if they are keen, they are even permitted to take away these items like from a Hotel Room.

And the second is in today's Business Line that SBI, Mangalore branch is receiving manure from some of their poultry loan borrowers and cultivating vegetables in their compound.  These are given to their customers, sometimes even as gift.  I just can not believe in what all diverse areas this mega-gigantic-bank of the country (my alma mater, of course, where I worked for 22 years between 1971 and 1993) is operating and calling itself the Banker to Every Indian.  Mera SBI Mahaaaan.

Muhammad Yunus removed from Grameen Bank!

It is Dr Muhammad Yunus, a  champion of the poor, an Economics Professor and a Nobel Laurete from Bangladesh; he is not Idi Amin, Saddam Hussain, Hosni Mubarak or Col Gaddafi.  He has been a saviour who showed a path to the rural poor women through Microfinance mantra and internationally acclaimed good samaritan.  If only he announces his intention to enter politics, the administration in Bangladesh resorts to remove him from the position he held in Grameen Bank!  Are we in a democracy and belong the the technology driven, modern twenty-first century or going back in history?http://www.microfinancefocus.com/prof-yunus-continuing-his-office-grameen-banks-legal-advisors#comment-1609
