Another eventful year passes by

Good bye to 2014 and welcome 2015.  In my personal life, there have been two or three significant events this year; my shifting from Manipal to Bangalore to join IFIM Business School as Dean Planning & Development; engagement of my daughter Sravanthi with Krishna Rao of Melbourne and my unexpected official trip to Shanghai China to witness the phenomenal growth and development over there.  Look forward to many more good things to happen in the coming year.  Fingers crossed!

One more shift in my professional career

On November 15, I bid good bye to TAPMI, Manipal for second and probably last time. It was a very long stint in my professional career, next only to SBI where I worked for 22 plus years and still have a very cordial relationship.  I firmly believed that my love and passion for excellence and sincerity to work hard and with gratitude, made me give my best to TAPMI even in my second stint.  Prominent works I did include Branding, Networking with Alumni, Ranking among top B-Schools, sponsoring at industry related events, nominating faculty and students for various contests and of course handle the Admissions, in which several new initiatives like digital marketing, study of HCM and BKFS programs country-wide and introduce the same.  I have been a mute spectator and witness several odd happenings too.

For whatever personal and professional developments during these five plus years since 2009, I had to make a firm decision to shift from Manipal to IFIM, Bangalore http://www.ifimbschool.com/about-ifim.html.  I have fully known the differences between TAPMI and IFIM, thanks to the earlier stint at Alliance for less than three years, during its transition days.  Now, it is my choice to work for IFIM, Bangalore while staying together with family, particularly my daughter Sravanthi, who will get married in April 2015.  After all, what is the purpose of life?

From the RBI Website

Once an iron curtain and a mere regulator, the central bank has certainly changed to be a facilitator.  Can never imagine the kind of information explosion on their site and posting of even minutes!

CBI registers FIR against members of SEBI: CNBC TV18 - Moneylife

CBI registers FIR against members of SEBI: CNBC TV18 - Moneylife

This news is incomplete and confusing.  While the names of four officials with designations are given here, the reasons or the details of the case are not furnished.  Should we take it as reliable and authentic? Can the media flash such half-news about filing of FIRs by CBI and no details? Surprising but interesting.  If only we have to express shock, it is because the body they belong to is an independent regulator of stock market in the country. Now, we have to wait for more time and details to come out; but in the meantime, investors confidence may be shattered.

New Banks Licences 2014

RBI initially planned to clear this task by January 2014 but it got delayed for some reasons. 26 applications for setting up of private banks were received by the regulator from different corporate houses, financial institutions, NGOs or Microfinance bodies and Postal Department.  Then came announcement of general elections and the issue was hanging.  Now that a clarification has been received from the Election Commission that RBI is free to go ahead, two organisations viz., IDFC and Bandhan are being permitted. This is a very healthy sign.  In a phased manner, may be other deserving outfits are also allowed to go ahead.
Rural Banking and Credit, Poverty Alleviation Programs, Cooperative movement, Microfinance or Financial Inclusion cannot remain mere buzz words or jargon for the academics, researchers, policy makers, bankers or social workers. What the farming and rural community need is support be it in kind or cash. Government can help improve their quality of life only by affording infrastructural facilities like roads, safe drinking water, education, shelter, veterinary and medical facilities, employment opportunities and so on. Once these indexes are announced, action and implementation towards attaining of tangible results is essential. These reports, books, articles or research papers cannot merely be placed in racks and libraries. What has been the outcome of 12 Five Year Plans in India post independence in 1947? Whether the fate of the common man below poverty line has changed even marginally? Only the rich are becoming richer while the politicians and bureaucrats have been baking the policies which do not benefit the poorer sections. Twenty-first century world is modern and advanced in many directions – scientifically, economically and technologically. All these resources and inputs should culminate in tangible deliverables. It is a pity that the world leaders continue to indulge in racial discrimination, economic sanctions while terrorism and communal differences prevail all over. Welfare is always given a go-bye.Microfinance and Financial Inclusion

Hence, I called it about five or six years back, Old Wine in New Bottle?

Famous People With Mental Illness Part 1 of 3

The men who crashed the world

The crash of September 2008 brought the
largest bankruptcies in world history, pushing more than 30 million
people into unemployment and bringing many countries to the edge of
insolvency. Wall Street turned back the clock to 1929. The first of a four-part investigation into a world of greed and recklessness that led to financial collapse.

In the first episode of Meltdown, we hear about four men who brought
down the global economy: a billionaire mortgage-seller who fooled
millions; a high-rolling banker with a fatal weakness; a ferocious Wall
Street predator; and the power behind the throne.

Banking On Change - India

Retail Banking an exciting field altogether; numerous products and services catering to all types of customers.  Scope for complaints is more in this area, thanks to poor service quality by bankers and increasing demand for efficient customer expectation by the cross section of customers.  As against, Rural Banking is full of satisfaction, loyalty, service and fulfillment together with development and quality of life. Not merely because of Priority Sector Lending Norms of RBI or Government, banks and bankers, particularly in Public Sector Banks, do wonders and miracles in serving the village artisans, agriculturists, women, minorities, weaker sections, and so on.

Manipal Technologies Ltd., Manipal organised a Workshop on BFSI for its National Marketing Team.  I was invited as one of the three speakers, the others being Mr SK Dhingra of Syndicate Bank and Mr BR Bhat of Corporation Bank.  Mr Abhay Gupte CEO presided over the event while the top Sales and Marketing Team organised the event at Hotel Valley View followed by a dinner.  Wonderful experience!

Five years back, on Jan 10, 2009, while I was working in Alliance Business School, Bangalore as a Professor of Finance & Registrar, I was invited by TAPMI, Manipal organising students group of Atharva to be an anchor for Polemic event covering Banking Sector - Reforms or Regulations.  The main speakers were senior bankers from RBI, Corporation Bank and Axis Bank.  It was such a nostalgic feeling for me to be back to TAPMI after about 2 and half years and entering in to a new campus.  There were several changes including exit of the previous Director in July 2008.  Dr AS Vasudev Rao was Director-in-Charge and many new faculty members joined the Institute.

Dr Simon George was Dean-Academics and both of them had invited me to re-join the Institute leaving behind my services with Alliance in Bangalore.  The event went on for about two hours closing with a dinner.  What a strange feeling to be a guest in an institute I had spent over seven years?  In due course, I made up my mind, considered to rejoin TAPMI, leaving behind my family members in Bangalore.  In the meantime, a new Director Dr Saji Gopinath assumed charge too.

It also is a fast mechanism to spread messages and photographs by not only individuals but institutions, media, political parties, business houses, clubs or groups of people with whom we have bondage.  Here is my page containing so many such views, thoughts, news, photos, etc.  Today, I have over 2,100 friends from different backgrounds and age groups.  I have been able to locate so many old friends from school or college days.

Year 2013 left quietly but not without leaving its foot prints.  Many good and bad but notable events took place both in the personal and official front for myself.  Similarly, at the national and global level too, several memorable developments took place.  We only look forward to some more new events to shape up in the year 2014 that arrived.  With hope we live and keep dreaming!
